Andrew, Don't know if your friend has experience of BMW's already, but if my mate's new 1150RS is anything to go by, he must enjoy "agricultural" gearboxes then. I have driven tractors with easier gear change than that. Just to make life even more fun, it also includes a "false neutral", between 3rd and 4th! Perfect butt clenching material when trying to get past lines of sugar cane trucks on narrow roads. Have been told that this characteristic is typical of BMW's, shame they can make good, reliable and fun bikes, but crappy gearboxes!

Hi Don
The present bike I've own no such problems you mention except clunky gear box if I change gear below the rpm range.
If you wants something more perfected you should try the new range from 1200 series cos they already got rid of the clunky gearbox and the ride's much smoother.

Yea sure, the pics looked really great, but I guess the price would be too! Don't know about your home country. But here in Singapore the R1200GS is S$41K while the R1200RT is $$46k. The price of the new R1200GS Adv not out yet. But I guess it's still the rider. There will be people who curse and swear at BMW motorcycle. Nothing good will come out from their mouth but in the end still end up owning 2 BMW motorcycles. There will be people who commented that certain bikes can't make it. You ask them why they will tell you that they heard that this and that got problems while they themselves can't even handle their own bike like bringing it up on the center stand. Well Don you be your own judge at the end of the day it's your own money. People commented that the R1150GS Adv cannot make it. But then this bike had proven otherwiase, how many people actually made it roun the world..

Andrew,There'a an adventure up for sale at 24k.Used to be the bike parked side by side at PML....
Don,BMW is a great handler and comfy too for long haul rides but how many of us really push it to the max?I would safely say 80% of our local riders buy BMW for the prestige it carries and not really because of the bike.So any 'flaws' in the construction would soon be overlooked because of the buying price. My previous GS 1100 had the problem you mentioned, but after riding it for awhile, you'll get used to it and eventually improve the gear changing technique. To me ,it's all about learning the characteristics of the bike. You can't silence a Ducati dry clutch can you?
Cheers!

My friend already checked out the bike. Enough said.
So which category do I fall into? I buy the GS to only ride in Singapore. The furtherest I've been was Cameron Highlands...
