WHAT should have been a short ride home from Johor Baru to Woodlands Ring Road turned into a nightmare for an elderly Singaporean couple.
Mr Abdul Wahab, 62, and his wife, Madam Saodah Saim, 56, had finished dinner with their family at Danga Bay across the Causeway at 10pm on Monday.
The couple hopped onto their motorcycle and rode towards Jalan Ibrahim in the direction of Singapore.
But two men on a motorbike with a Johor licence plate pulled up next to them and suddenly snatched a handbag that was resting on Madam Saodah's lap.
'I didn't realise what had happened until I heard my wife shout, 'Bag! Bag! Bag,' ' Mr Abdul told Berita Harian.
'I wanted to help her, but I couldn't simply let go of the motorbike - we could have fallen off.'
Mr Abdul tried to give chase but he didn't want to risk their lives as traffic was heavy.
Madam Saodah's bag contained $100, RM100 ($44) and documents such has her IC and passport.
The couple made a report at a police station and went to a Malaysian Immigration office to get a letter that would allow them to return to Singapore.
Madam Saodah, an office cleaner, was so traumatised by the incident that she did not go to work the next day.
The couple are the latest Singaporean victims of a string of robberies that have taken place recently in JB.
Last November, the motorcycle that Mr Salim Yasin and wife Jamaliah Eepin were riding on was forced off the road before they were robbed.
Last month, NSman Rosdee Ismail, 20, was attacked with a parang by a robber, who took his motorbike.
And two weeks ago, 17-year-old Mohamed Munir was lured to a carpark near City Square before he was robbed.
