Clutch plates if wearing out will give you symptoms first. You will feel that the engine is not transferring it's torque to the wheels, instead it will show as signs of over revving on the initial start and you will suddenly feel as if the clutch has fully set in only later even though you have already released the clutch lever much earlier.Signs of clutch slippage.
In more severe cases, the engine will over rev unnecessarily if you try to pick up speed.Instead of gaining speed and momentum, you'll here more growl from the engine but no performance.Again signs of clutch slippage.
In worse cases, you can engage the gears and release the clutch lever and the engine won't stall but the bike don't move as well.If you have reached this stage, then I will have to salute you for you have managed to fully utilised the lifespan of the clutch plates....
Burning smell only applies to dry clutch as the friction plates, instead of mating and transferring the torque,is spinning and grinding with each other causing heat and thus the burning smell.
Most of the AT I've seen don't seen to have a clutch problem, only cluth cable.Maybe you can try the cables first as they are relatively cheap to replace.Afterall, these are considered wear and tear parts.

Uncle,if it's for you CBR,I tink it's using hydraulic to work it's clutch.$155 is a small amount of money to pay if he changes the whole clutch pump,of which I don't tink so.Usual problems with hydraulics are seals and plunger assembly.Relatively easy job but time consuming and messy when you need to bleed the system.
Have done once for a friend on his Suzuki.Total cost of spares plus DOT 4 fluid is less than $50 bucks but I guess being a Honda rider,we know that Honda parts do cost a little more than Suzuki.Nevertheless, nothing beats a satisfied customer and Uncle Mike,no worries about the cost man! It's worth it since it's done by a professional.Having it done by me have got no guarantee coz we are mostly theoretically inclined.Just what we know from books and the internet.
